Let’s Celebrate our Political System!
It’s 2016 and presidential campaigns season is well under way.
Have you ever noticed that in every presidential campaign, the one thing they all begin to do, which seems to happen in every race, is talk about how they can divide the American people. You have this group and that group and another group all vying for our attention, vying for our vote.
As I said, this is about celebrating what is great about America, so I want to talk about what is extraordinary about this particular political year and what we should really appreciate and celebrate.
THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE
In addition to having the most extraordinary political system in the world, the people may be flawed but the system is pretty great regarding how we pick our leaders. We get to choose who will lead this country and we have been doing this for over two hundred years.
Some countries may vote for a Prime Minister, but they still have a monarchy, one person who in the end can approve (or not) the voice of the people. Some countries have their political leaders of the opposition killed or “disposed of,” while in some countries the people don’t even have a voice.
DIVERSITY IN POLITICS
We not only have a voice, but this year we have even greater diversity. Look who got in the game. We had two women, two women running for President! There was a time when that would have been unheard of, but now it is clearly possible.
We have a man who is the first Jew to win a primary in a Presidential election. Bernie Sanders made history. Congratulations Senator Sanders!!!
We have two men who are of Cuban descent. They are bilingual, and most Presidential candidates are not usually bilingual.
We have an African-American man who is a gifted surgeon running for President. It was a great accomplishment that he became a surgeon, but to also run for President, pretty dam cool!!
DIVERSITY IN AMERICA
We have Catholics, Protestants and Jews. We have people from different religions, different genders and different points of view. We are also bigger than the political labels of Liberal, Conservative, Independent, and Socialist.
We have diversity. America is always expanding. We get so caught up in the here and now that we never take the time to breathe and take in how far we have come, what we have accomplished, what we have achieved.
Yes there is more, there will always be more that we can do, but if we begin by acknowledging what we have, we know that we can have even more and be even better.
THE INFORMATION AGE & AND THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE
I am not saying we have to or will agree with the agenda of all the candidates, and by the time this video airs many will have already dropped out of the race. But we have choice. We have the choice to listen or ignore. We have choice to research, to go deeper and really review who we want to represent us, who we want to serve.
We have the choice to make our own decisions in the privacy of our own home. We don’t have to accept what anyone, a media outlet, endorser, or a friend says. We can listen, read, ponder and decide on our own terms, in the privacy of the booth, who we want to represent us for any political office.
America sees this in families all the time, and those families, after the all the votes are counted, will continue to be a family, and we will continue to be Americans. That is something to celebrate, to appreciate and to cherish.
There are many countries and people around the world who do not have the opportunity to have a voice. You have a voice and only you can allow someone to take it away from you. Celebrate, participate and honor this great political system that we have.
